CURIE Academy - Cornell University

CURIE Academy is a one-week summer residential program at Cornell University for high school girls who excel in math and science, enjoy solving problems, and want to learn more about careers in engineering. The target population are current sophomore and junior girls from all backgrounds.

Goals: The primary goals of the Academy include:

  • Exposing students to the exciting opportunities existing for them in engineering
  • Helping students understand that women are needed in the STEM disciplines
  • Demonstrating the connections between the study of engineering and solving problems affecting people and society

Program Dates: July 18-24, 2010 (attendance is required for the entire program)

Application: Available online at www.engineering.cornell.edu/curie

Application Deadline: postmarked by March 1, 2010

Admission Notification: Mid-April, 2010

Eligibility and Application Requirements:

  • Current high school sophomores and juniors
  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale
  • Completed application must be accompanied by:
    • Typed essay of 500 words maximum explaining the following:
      • Why the applicant wants to participate in the CURIE program
      • What she hopes to gain from the experience
      • What interests her about engineering
      • What thoughts she has about her future career
    • Written recommendation from a math or science teacher or a high school counselor
    • Official high school transcript
    • High school profile
